"I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in." - John Muir

A motivating principle that guides Sol y Luna is to help create a sustainability conscious and empowered child, school and community. Our school is powered by solar energy, and rain barrels are utilized to harvest water. Our organic garden and fruit trees provide children with the opportunity to observe, grow, harvest, cook, and enjoy our own food.  Children also take responsibility in ensuring the the garden's health. All of the served food at Sol y Luna is organic, and purchased locally to support local farming. In the kitchen children help prepare harvested fruits and vegetables to enjoy healthy snacks. Our food scraps are composted and taken back to the garden to minimize  waste. We have plans to begin a neighborhood produce exchange program where we can share excess produce to minimize waste, add variety to our produce, and help build community relationships. Sol y Luna, like the children, is evolving and growing. Children will take part in developing new projects that help enhance and further our ambitious sustainability goals.

Outdoor classroom

Our outdoor classroom has been designed to connect children with nature and foster respect, admiration, and environmental stewardship.

It has been modeled after the Outdoor Classroom Project, founded by Eric Nelson, whose mission is to make teachers, administrators, and parents aware of the positive impact that outdoor play has on a children's development, including their health, self-concept, and future school success.

All materials used in the construction are natural and ecologically sound. Throughout the program we make decisions to encourage appreciation for our natural and manufactured resources. For example, in the art studio we partake in projects like making our own paint, brushes, glue, and paper with the children to build gratitude for the materials available to them.
